Türkiye’s domestically developed SOM-J cruise missile has successfully struck its target with pinpoint accuracy during a live-warhead test, Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır said.

The missile, developed by TÜBİTAK’s Defense Industry Research and Development Institute (SAGE), completed its latest firing test as part of ongoing development efforts. Kacır said the system is expected to significantly enhance Türkiye’s precision strike capabilities.

Advanced Capabilities for Modern Warfare

Kacır highlighted that SOM-J is designed for modern combat environments, featuring low observability and high maneuverability.

The missile supports post-launch control via data link, allowing operators to retarget or abort missions mid-flight. It is also equipped with an imaging infrared (IIR) seeker and advanced terminal guidance, improving accuracy against both land and maritime targets.

Other key features include:

  • Low radar cross-section (stealth capability)
  • Resistance to electronic countermeasures (ECM)
  • Network-enabled operations
  • Warhead optimized for surface targets

Technical Specifications and Operational Role

The SOM-J is an air-to-surface cruise missile designed for use against heavily defended land and naval targets. It can be carried internally or on external hardpoints.

Technical specifications include:

  • Range: Over 250 km (with potential for further extension)
  • Speed: High subsonic
  • Warhead: Approximately 140 kg
  • Guidance: INS + GPS + TRN + ATA + IIR

The missile is fully compatible with network-centric warfare systems, enabling coordinated strike operations.

Integration with Next-Generation Platforms

Integration of SOM-J is ongoing with Türkiye’s next-generation platforms, including KAAN, KIZILELMA, and ANKA-III.

Its deployment on both manned and unmanned systems is expected to enable coordinated long-range strike operations, significantly enhancing deep-strike capabilities.

Development Progress and Previous Tests

The SOM-J previously demonstrated its effectiveness in a March 21, 2025 test, successfully striking a maritime target.

Development efforts continue, focusing on improving software, navigation systems, and target recognition capabilities.

Part of the Modular SOM Missile Family

The SOM family consists of modular, precision-guided stand-off munitions designed to engage targets without entering enemy air defense zones.

Variants include:

  • SOM-A
  • SOM-B1
  • SOM-B2
  • SOM-J

The SOM-J is considered a key asset due to its stealth features, high precision, and network-enabled capabilities.

Strategic Impact

Once fully integrated with next-generation platforms, SOM-J is expected to play a critical role in strengthening Türkiye’s long-range strike capability and overall deterrence posture.
