ASELSAN’s KGK-84 Winged Guidance Kit scored a direct hit on a target at sea in its first qualification range test, fired from an F-16 fighter jet at the Sinop Firing Range, the company said on Monday.

“With its high destructive power, the KGK-84, a force multiplier on the battlefield, is ready for action,” ASELSAN said in a statement.

The kit turns 2,000-pound-class free-fall bombs into long-range precision munitions. It gives the Turkish Air Force a way to put heavy warheads on target without flying into the engagement envelope of enemy air defenses.

The KGK-84 made its first live-fire test from an F-16 in December 2025. The latest firing was the first range test in the system’s qualification process.

Gliding flight beyond 100 kilometers

Deployable wings attached to the bomb turn a ballistic drop into a long-range glide. According to technical data on the system, the kit can be released from an F-16 at altitudes between 10,000 and 40,000 feet, and its range exceeds 100 kilometers when dropped from 40,000 feet.

The munition flies a series of pre-programmed waypoints using an integrated inertial navigation system and global positioning system (INS/GPS). That allows a route that bends around air defense sites instead of running straight at the target.

  • Guidance: INS/GPS, fire-and-forget; no input from the aircraft after release
  • Accuracy: circular error probable (CEP) under 10 meters, according to ASELSAN
  • Release altitude: 10,000–40,000 feet
  • Range: more than 100 kilometers from 40,000 feet
  • Impact angle: selectable before launch
  • Operation: day or night, all weather
  • Interface: MIL-STD-1760 compliant, for integration on the F-16 and on future platforms such as KAAN and KIZILELMA
  • Total weight with bomb: about 1.1 metric tons

Anti-jam antenna and inertial backup

The KGK-84 carries an eight-channel controlled reception pattern antenna (CRPA) at the rear of its body. The antenna suppresses jamming aimed at Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals so the kit keeps receiving the genuine satellite signal.

If satellite reception is lost entirely, the kit keeps flying toward the target. Its inertial navigation system works out position from accelerometer and gyroscope data and holds the programmed course.

Defense reports say the design took account of the heavy electronic warfare seen in the war in Ukraine.

Heaviest member of the KGK family

The KGK-84 is the heaviest kit in ASELSAN’s Winged Guidance Kit family. The KGK-82, for the 500-pound-class MK-82 bomb, and the KGK-83, for the 1,000-pound-class MK-83, have already reached serial production.

The lighter kits are aimed at soft and semi-hardened ground targets. The KGK-84 was developed for high-value targets such as hardened concrete bunkers, command and control centers and ammunition depots.

The kit is compatible with the MK-84 and MK-84-T general-purpose bombs and with the NEB and NEB-T penetrator bombs developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE, the defense research institute of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye. According to the source material, compatibility also covers the NEB-1/2 HAYALET bunker-buster warheads and GAZAP warheads with enhanced blast effect.

Lower-cost alternative to cruise missiles

With no propulsion system, the kit is cheaper and quicker to produce than a cruise missile. Fitting it to unguided bombs already in the inventory turns existing stocks into precision weapons and adds heavy strike capacity for suppression and destruction of enemy air defenses (SEAD/DEAD) missions.

After the first test firing in December 2025, ASELSAN General Manager Ahmet Akyol said: “Our new guided munition, the KGK-84, will be a game-changer with its strike power and attack capabilities.” He pointed to the kit’s propulsion-free design, selectable impact angle and resistance to jamming.

Haluk Görgün, president of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), said at the time: “Our guidance kits, developed with national engineering expertise, have once again confirmed the Turkish defense industry’s resolve and technological competence on the battlefield.”

Greek media reaction

The kit has drawn attention in Greece. The Greek outlet Pentapostagma reported that the KGK-84 outranges the U.S.-made JDAM-ER, which it put at about 75 kilometers.

Analyses in the Greek press said Türkiye could now strike Greek islands east of the 25th meridian and Thrace from long range with heavy firepower, and called for Greece to speed up its multilayered air defense project, Achilles Shield.

Export plans

ASELSAN is also marketing the KGK-84 abroad. The company showed an upgraded version of the system at the EDEX exhibition in Cairo in December 2025.
