Somali officials welcomed the Turkish Navy warship TCG Sancaktar at the Port of Mogadishu in a formal ceremony, underscoring deepening defense and maritime security cooperation between Türkiye and Somalia.
The vessel arrived carrying a delegation led by Turkish Naval Forces Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Mustafa Kaya, who is conducting an official visit to review preparations for upcoming missions under the Somali Maritime Task Force framework.
Mission Assessment and Operational Review
During the visit, the delegation assessed the logistical, operational, and technical readiness of units scheduled to operate under the Somali Turkish Task Force Command. These include an Amphibious Marine Infantry Battalion and supporting engineering elements expected to contribute to maritime security and infrastructure support missions.
The review focused on force preparedness, deployment planning, and coordination mechanisms with Somali counterparts.
High-Level Somali Attendance
The welcoming ceremony was presided over by Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Omar Abdi Ali, and the Commander of the Somali National Army, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamuud.
Officials described the port visit as a reflection of expanding bilateral cooperation in safeguarding territorial waters, strengthening naval capacity, and enhancing regional maritime stability.
Mission to support offshore energy security
The deployment follows an announcement by Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense that several naval assets — including TCG Gökova and TCG Bafra — would operate in Somali waters.
According to officials, the mission aims to secure offshore oil and natural gas exploration activities and provide logistical support for related operations. The presence of Turkish naval vessels is also expected to deter maritime threats in the region, including piracy and sabotage risks tied to energy infrastructure.
