Dearsan Shipyard has officially launched the New Generation Mine Countermeasure Vessel (YMAG) program with its first steel cutting ceremony, attended by officials from the Turkish Naval Forces and the Defense Industry Presidency (SSB). This milestone marks a historic step for Türkiye’s defense industry, showcasing its ability to design and build advanced naval platforms.

YMAG is designed as a “mine warfare base” supported by unmanned systems, reflecting modern mine countermeasures concepts. More than just a new ship, YMAG symbolizes national engineering strength, self-confidence, and Türkiye’s determination to dominate the seas.

Ship Design and Technical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 80 m length, 16.6 m width, 3.5 m draft
  • Material: Non-magnetic steel hull resistant to magnetic triggering
  • Crew: 60 core personnel + up to 90 with unmanned system operators
  • Propulsion: 3 diesel generators + 2 electrically driven Voith Schneider (eVSP) propellers → 360° maneuverability
  • Concept: Mine clearance via USVs, AUVs, and UAVs using the “mother ship + unmanned systems” model, minimizing direct exposure to hazardous zones

Compared to the Aydın class, YMAG is larger, quieter, and more advanced. Its propulsion reduces acoustic signature, while its modern superstructure supports USV hangars, a UAV runway, and crane systems for seamless unmanned operations.

Project Timeline and Manufacturers

  • Start: 2024 (based on SSİK decision under SSB coordination)
  • Main Contractor: Dearsan Shipyard (platform construction)
  • Design: SEFT Engineering (integration & unmanned system compatibility)

Subcontractors and Contributions:

  • STM: NETA AUV, multi-purpose ROVs
  • ASELSAN: Deringöz AUV, radar and sonar systems
  • HAVELSAN: ADVENT combat management system

Schedule:

  • First steel cut: 2025
  • First ship delivery: 2028
  • Second ship service entry: 2029–2030

Mission Profiles
