Türkiye has completed the first export of a warship in its history to a NATO and European Union member state, after ASFAT signed a contract with the Romanian Ministry of Defence for an offshore patrol vessel (OPV).
In a statement, ASFAT announced that the TCG Akhisar, which was built at the Istanbul Shipyard Command and completed in 2024, had been successfully transferred to the Romanian Navy. The company described the delivery as a significant achievement for Turkey’s defence industry, showcasing its growing competitiveness in the global naval market.
According to the statement, this export demonstrates the growing trust that international partners place in Turkish naval platforms, marking a new phase in defence cooperation between Ankara and Bucharest. The vessel is expected to bolster Romania’s maritime security and bolster its ongoing efforts to modernise its fleet.
Industry Leadership View
Defense Industry President Haluk Görgün welcomed the agreement, calling it “an important milestone for Turkey’s defense industry.”
“ASFAT’s first warship export to a NATO and EU member country reflects Türkiye’s advanced capabilities in naval systems and the confidence allied nations place in our technology,” he said, congratulating all stakeholders involved.
Romania’s Procurement Plan
Romania’s parliament had earlier approved the acquisition of a NATO-standard light corvette equipped with modern systems. Defense Minister Ionuț Moșteanu announced that the ship would cost €223 million, excluding VAT. With missiles and additional systems, the total procurement cost is expected to reach €265 million.
